The Street
There is a street in Hayward, California.
Quiet, unremarkable to most people passing through. To us, it is the whole origin story.
Standish is where Jesse grew up, alongside brothers and friends. Where they played, competed, and caused good trouble. Confidence was built slowly, through games, through each other, through knowing exactly where you belonged.
They carried themselves a certain way on that street. They knew it then. They still do.
That street gave Jesse something most people spend their whole lives looking for. A sense of self. A standard to carry.
When it came time to name this company, there was only one answer.
That is STANDISH.
The Idea
Tailoring has rules. A shoulder that sits where it should. A line that holds from collar to hem. A fit that is measured, not guessed.
Knitwear has usually been allowed to be softer. Looser. Easier to forget.
We did not believe it had to choose.
We began with a single conviction: the discipline of classic tailoring belongs in knitwear. Considered construction. Precise fit. A structure that stays with the garment, softened by the ease and movement only a knit can give. A blazer that holds its shape. A trouser that falls cleanly. A dress that moves when she does.
Rigorous in the making. Fluid enough to live in.
The Woman
The woman we design for is our center of gravity.
She buys with intention. She values permanence over novelty. She would rather own fewer things and wear them well. Her wardrobe is not measured by how much hangs in it. It is measured by the pieces she returns to again and again.
Everything we make begins with her. By design, not by volume.
The Names
Every piece in our first collection carries a woman's name.
Dolores. Lola. Mickey. Evie. Gail. Suzy. Jodi. Paula. Julie. Jessica. Drian. Doreen. Rhea.
None of them are invented. Each is a real woman who shaped our lives. The names are dedications. They give the collection its emotional architecture, and they tie each garment to a woman whose influence reaches far beyond the clothes.
When you wear one, you carry a little of her with you.
The Makers
We design and operate in Portland, Oregon. Every piece is made with MAEKNIT, our production partner in New York City. Each garment is knit, linked, and hand-finished by some of the most experienced knitwear specialists working today.
Their team brings decades of expertise across programming, knitting, linking, and finishing. They work without minimum order quantities. That is what makes our model possible. We do not have to produce in bulk in order to produce at all.
The Materials
Our yarn comes primarily from Italian mills, chosen for quality and as the foundation for everything we build. Select materials come through certified suppliers, with standards covering organic fiber content, textile safety, responsible wool sourcing, animal welfare, and supply-chain traceability.
We start with the best fiber we can find. The construction does the rest.
The Pace
We make to order.
Each garment is made in response to an actual order, not a forecast. Nothing sits in a warehouse waiting for a markdown.
It takes a little longer. That is intentional. A slower process means less excess, and a more thoughtful relationship between the clothes, the people who make them, and the woman who wears them.
The Hand
Natural fibers are alive in a way synthetics are not. You may notice a slight slub in the yarn, a little light shedding in the first wears, or small differences from one stitch or seam to the next.
These are not flaws. They are evidence of the hand. No two pieces are exactly alike, and they are not meant to be.
The Founders
STANDISH. was founded in Portland, Oregon, by Jesse Burton and Gerard Gonzales, partners in life and business.
Jesse, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer, grew up in a Deaf household, where a visual sensitivity took shape long before it became a profession. Over more than twenty years at the intersection of fashion and performance, Jesse has led creative teams for Nike, Calvin Klein, Vivienne Westwood, Kostas Murkudis, Ralph Lauren, Aem'kei, Umbro, and Reebok. That pioneering work in knitwear and apparel design now shapes every piece we make.
Gerard, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer, spent over twenty years in inside and retail sales, building revenue and customer loyalty across a range of industries. Here, he leads production coordination, finance, e-commerce, and go-to-market operations. The discipline is the same. The difference is that the growth now belongs to something he built himself. A committed supporter of the arts, Gerard finds that music, film, and fine art continue to shape how he thinks, leads, and builds.
One of us sees the garment. The other sees it through to your door. Together, we built the brand we wanted to wear, and to give to the women we love.
